Absence From School

It is a departmental requirement that all absences be explained by one of the following:

·        Telephone call to the school;

·        Personal explanation by the parent.

Administration of Prescribed medication

In terms of the Department’s policy requirements, the school does not administer prescription medications. Medication such as ventolin should stay with students.

Please contact the school for more detail.

 The school provides emergency care for students when required and has ambulance coverage. Emergency medication e.g., allergic reaction to bee stings, should be handed to the office with the following information clearly stated in writing:

·        child’s name;

·        name of the medication;

·        when it is to administered;

·        amount to be administered

·        a medical plan signed by a doctor.

Please hand this in at the office.  It is dangerous for children to keep medication in their school bags.  The school will not take responsibility for any medication not correctly received.  If medication needs to be regularly administered, contact the Principal as other requirements are needed.

School Hours

Official school hours are from 8.30am to 3.00pm and during these hours teachers are available to supervise students.  Between 8.30 and 9.00am supervision is indirect with a teacher on duty and available on request. Any students who arrive at school must sit on the seats provided, under the covered walkway, until the 8.30am bell rings.

After 8.30am students must play in the front playground or other areas permitted by staff.  As there is no supervision outside these hours, please make suitable arrangements to collect your children promptly.

Departmental rules stress that children are not permitted to leave the school grounds during school hours unless permission to do so has been received by the school.  This regulation was formulated for the protection of your children.

On occasions, when a parent wishes a child to go home early, the school must be notified by a note, personal visit or telephone call.

All late arrivers or early leavers must attend the administration office to collect a yellow pass to be handed to the class teacher on arrival or before departure from school.  This pass must be  completed and signed by a parent /caregiver.

Travel to School

All students who live more than 1.6km (straight-line distance on a map) are entitled to assistance for travel to school.

Hunter Valley Buses provides a school service from the Meadows to the school and from Brown’s Road to the school.  Students who qualify are entitled to free bus transport.  All infants children are entitled to this but only whilst they are in kindergarten, years 1 and 2.  All students going into year 3 must submit a new application.

If a special journey is made by car to convey your child to school  or nearest bus stop and you live more than 1.6km (straight-line distance on a map), you are eligible for a conveyance subsidy.  Forms for all eligible students must be completed by parents and returned to school.

Bus Behaviour

From time to time it is brought to our attention that the conduct of certain students on the school bus is unsafe.  In accordance with the Department of Education & Training’s policy on the “Supervision of Students”, our staff have conveyed to the students rules related to safe behaviour and the bus company is responsible for giving  each child a code of conduct (see Attachment 3).  These rules are listed for your attention.  Any breach of these rules should be brought to the attention of the parents concerned by the bus company and it is anticipated appropriate action will be taken by both the parents and the bus company to avoid repetition.  The bus company may withdraw a student’s bus pass.

Road Rules

Students who walk home have been given the following set of instructions regarding safe road behaviour.

 ·        Always walk to the side of the road.

·        Walk on the side of the road so you are facing oncoming traffic, if
   possible.

·        Be aware of traffic and possible dangers around you.

·        Go straight home.

·        Do not accept lifts or gifts from strangers.

 It is also important that you as parents explain to your children from whom they are allowed to accept lifts.  There may be people who are not strangers but with whom you do not wish your child to accompany.

Students who travel by car are expected to wear seat belts in accordance with the law. Student should not be permitted to cross Blackhill Road on their own due to the danger of cars and trucks. Students should leave cars and immediately go inside the school gates in the morning, and in the afternoon only leave the school gates to immediately go to the car.

Changes to Student Information

It is prudent to inform the school immediately of any contact details, change of address so parents/caregivers can be contacted in case of emergency.

Enrolment Procedures

Contact the school office for an enrolment package.  When an application to enrol is completed the school will assess the information and contact you regarding enrolment.  It should be noted that at times, out of area enrolments may be placed on a waiting list.

Lost Property

Lost property is placed in a box in the office foyer.  It is much easier to locate the owner of clothing if it is clearly labelled.  It is important to remember that after a number of washes, labels need to be renewed as they fade.

Newsletter

Newsletters outlining school news and events are sent home with students each Wednesday.  It is important to read this publication as we attempt to keep you regularly informed with information involving the school.

Payment Procedure

All payments, voluntary school fees, text books, excursions etc. and notes (except absentee notes) should be placed in a sealed envelope, clearly marked with your child’s name, class, reason for payment and the amount enclosed and posted in the school mail box situated in the foyer.  Funds are available to assist with costs in the case of genuine financial hardship.  Please contact the Principal.
