Teaching and Learning

Key Learning Areas

At our school students study English, Maths, Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE), Science and Technology, Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) and Personal Development, Health, Physical Education (PD/H/PE).

Library

Information Technology lessons are conducted on Mondays.  All students have access to library and technology facilities.  When students borrow books it is important that they use a suitable bag that will protect the book in transit from school to home, particularly in wet weather.  Our excellent library facilities have been developed with assistance from community fundraising and we appreciate this large financial commitment.

Excursions

We attempt to program an excursion per term to highlight our educational activities as well as broaden student experiences.  Details regarding time, cost, uniform and other requirements are sent home prior to the planned excursion.

For some small group events, e.g., sport or debating, our excursions may require parent assistance with private motor vehicles.  If you are able to assist the following is necessary and are department requirements:

·        The vehicle has current registration;

·        Students have written parental consent to travel by car.

All students will require a written consent note for every excursion outside the school grounds.

For most school excursions a bus is used.  The cost of the bus is included in the price of the excursion.  The school has a fund to assist parents with genuine financial hardship.

No student at Black Hill School needs to miss out on any activity due to financial difficulties.

Sport
Tuesday and Friday are sports days and children are required to wear their sports uniform on these days.  Please refer to the uniform attachment.  The school conducts a daily fitness program with a variety of activities.  Some sporting activity is conducted every day of the week.  If your child is unable to join in due to illness, please send a note to the class teacher.

Homework

Homework is provided to reinforce work completed in class and to develop good regular study patterns.  It is the responsibility of staff to set and grade homework tasks.  It is the responsibility of parents/caregivers to oversee the completion and quality of work.

Scripture

Scripture is non-denominational and is presented by visiting community members each week.  If you do not wish your child to participate, please notify the school in writing.

Student Progress and Achievement

A number of processes exist to maintain a close working relationship between home and school.

bulletAt the start of each year parents are invited to class information sessions.
bulletParents are encouraged to arrange parent/teacher interviews when necessary or at least following formal reporting processes.
bulletA formal report is sent home at the end of Terms 2 and 4 indicating student performance in terms of curriculum outcomes.

As well as these processes, parents are encouraged to visit the school and discuss progress or concerns with class teachers.  Appointments are necessary as teachers are not able to leave class to conduct interviews.
